Protecting Your Security

Apple Pay uses security features to ensure that your payments are secure. Instead of using the name, credit or debit card number, and security code on your actual card, Apple Pay assigns a unique Device Account Number with a transaction-specific dynamic security code to process your payment each time you make a purchase. These numbers are never stored on Apple servers and never shared with merchants.

    • What is Apple Pay ?

      Apple Pay is a new way for consumers to make purchases with their electronic device instead of a plastic credit or debit card. Transactions can be made at participating merchant Point of Sale (POS) locations using the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip embedded in the consumer’s phone to communicate card data.

    • Where can I use Apple Pay?

      In order to accept Apple Pay, merchants must have NFC enabled equipment at the payment terminal. For in store purchases, look for the contactless payment symbol image-descriptionor image-description at Apple Pay accepting merchants, such as McDonald’s, Whole Foods Market and Macy’s. Over 220,000 retail locations accept Apple Pay in the U.S. Visit Apple (www.apple.com/apple-pay/where-to-use-apple-pay/) for a list of stores and apps where Apple Pay is accepted.

      For in app purchases, look for the “Buy with Apple Pay” or “Apple Pay” button as a payment method.

      Apple Pay is free to use, but your carrier may charge you for your data usage.

      According to Apple, Apple Pay is a contactless payment method that offers unique security features built into the Apple device. It’s a simple and secure way of paying in stores and within apps that offers customers an added layer of protection and privacy.

      Priority Destinations, Priority Rewards, Cash Rewards, Heritage, United MileagePlus, Debit (Personal Cards only, MasterCard only, VISA coming soon).

    • What devices can use Apple Pay?

      Apple’s products: iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Watch, iPad Air® 2, and iPad mini 3 running iOS 8.1 or later. Use the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 for in app purchases only.

    • Is Apple Pay secure?

      According to Apple, Apple Pay uses multiple security features to ensure safe transactions. Instead of using your actual credit or debit card numbers, Apple Pay assigns a unique Device Account Number with a transaction-specific dynamic security code for each purchase. All purchases must also be confirmed with your fingerprint or passcode.

    • How will my information be protected?

      Because Apple Pay uses a unique Device Account Number instead of your actual card number, your identity and account information are withheld from the merchant. Your card information is also not stored on Apple servers.

    • If I use an FHB card with rewards such as CashPoints, Priority Miles, etc. with Apple Pay, will I still earn those rewards?

      Yes, you will continue earning the same rewards.

    • How do I use Apple Pay with my FHB credit or debit card?

      You can easily add your card information in one of two ways. The first way is to add your FHB consumer credit or consumer debit card from your iTunes® account to Passbook by entering your card security code. The second way is to add the account to Passbook by entering the card information manually or taking a photo of the card using the iSight camera.       Note: Devices must be approved by Apple for Apple Pay and run on iOS 8.1 or newer.
    • If I use Apple Pay, will First Hawaiian Bank still provide the same level of coverage for unauthorized purchases?

      Yes, First Hawaiian Bank will still provide the same level of coverage as long as fraudulent transactions are reported to us in a timely manner.

    • How do I use Apple Pay when I’m ready to make purchases or payments?

      When you are ready to pay at a merchant that accepts Apple Pay, place your Apple device close to the contactless symbol. Your fingerprint or passcode will then be needed to verify your purchase. You may need to sign a receipt, depending on the store and the transaction amount. Once you feel subtle vibration and see a checkmark on the screen, the transaction is complete.

    • How do I set my First Hawaiian Bank card as my default card to pay?

      The first credit or debit card you add to Passbook automatically becomes your default card. To change your default card, go to Settings > Passbook & Apple Pay > Default Card.

    • Can Apple Pay work with multiple cards or devices?

      You can load up to 8 cards per device. You may also load the same card on up to 9 devices.

    • How do I remove a card from Apple Pay?

      You can remove a card from Apple Pay at any time. Just open Passbook, tap the card you want to remove, tap the image-description icon, and tap Remove Card.

    • Is adding a card different on iPhone and iPad?

      Yes. On approved iPads, open Settings, tap Passbook & Apple Pay, then tap Add Credit or Debit Card. To add your first card on approved iPhones, open Passbook and tap Set Up Apple Pay. To add more cards on your iPhone, swipe down and tap the plus symbol in the upper right corner.

    • What is a Device Account Number and where can I find it?

      A Device Account Number is a unique number assigned to each card for security. It is different from your actual card number. This special number can be found in Passbook under the image-description icon.

    • What if my iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen?

      Please inform First Hawaiian Bank as soon as possible by calling the number on the back of your card. FHB will gladly assist with removing FHB issued cards from Apple Pay. If you have cards issued by a different bank, you would need to contact those issuers for assistance.

      In general, you should always review your statements for unauthorized charges. This is even more important if you recently lost your iPhone or iPad. If you see unauthorized charges, follow the instructions on your statement. Please note you must contact us within 60 days after the error appeared on your statement.

    • What if my actual card is lost or stolen?

      Report your lost or stolen credit or debit card to FHB as soon as you can (Contact Us). Once your card is reported lost or stolen, remove it from Apple Pay. When you receive your new card you will need to add that new card to Apple Pay and go through the verification process.

    • What happens when I replace my iPhone or iPad?

      Follow the setup process to add your FHB cards to Apple Pay in your new device. Your credit or debit card information will not transfer automatically from the old device. Please be sure to delete your card information in your old device.

    • Why does my card image in Passbook look different from my physical card?

      Because we offer multiple card designs in each product type, the digital representation may not match your card. However, you will see a First Hawaiian Bank Card product image/branding. Rest assured that as long as card information is verified and accepted in Passbook, Apple Pay will work normally.
