As the owner of a successful veterinary clinic, Dr. Darin Hisanaga saw the growing demand for 24/7 emergency pet care, advanced medical procedures and specialties such as reproduction services. He created a business plan and showed it to First Hawaiian business banker Paul Nakachi.
The challenges were many, from zoning to permits and securing the loan. "Paul warned us from the beginning that it wasn't going to be easy." recalled Dr. Hisanaga. Adds Paul, "It was something I wanted to do because a veterinarian clinic of this size and magnitude had never been done before."
"Paul went to bat for us. He recommended that a portion of the loan go through HEDCO to make it more affordable. That showed he was looking out for our best interest - and not just for First Hawaiian's."
Last summer, the newly renamed Waipahu-Waikele Pet Hospital opened in the Mill Town Center with 10 veterinary specialists and 34 support staff. Boasting 11,000 square-feet, the state-of-the-art facility is the largest locally-owned 24/7 veterinary hospital in the state.
"My organization has been with FHB since 1971, for 42 years." says Dr. Hisanaga. "The fact that they've been our bank all the way through speaks for itself. Paul - especially now that we have gone through this long process - isn't just my banker, he's my friend. I am cautious of who we trust. Paul has my trust and my respect. And that's the highest complement I can give him."
