What is a routing number?

A bank routing number is the first nine digits appearing across the bottom of a check that identify the financial institution. This is used for check orders, direct deposits, and ACH transactions. Some companies refer to this as the "ABA routing number" and ask you for this number when processing a payment by phone or web.
