Understanding Overdrafts

An overdraft occurs when there is not enough money in the account to cover a transaction, but the bank pays it anyway. First Hawaiian Bank can cover overdrafts in two different ways:

  • First Hawaiian has standard overdraft practices that come with our accounts.

  • We also offer overdraft protection plans, such as a link to a savings account or Yes-Check, an overdraft line of credit, which may be less expensive than our standard overdraft practices.

Standard Overdraft Practices

When an overdraft occurs, our standard practice is to try to honor, or pay, the item rather than returning it unpaid.  Click below to learn more about our standard overdraft practices.
