Nobody likes paying fees, especially when they can be avoided with a few easy steps. At First Hawaiian Bank, we want to help you get the most out of your checking account while keeping more of your money where it belongs: with you. Here are five simple ways to steer clear of common checking account fees.

  1. Set up Direct Deposit

How it works: (alt: What to know)

Direct deposit automatically places your paycheck, pension, Social Security, or other recurring income directly into your account—no waiting, no paper checks.

    Why it matters:

  • With specific direct deposit amount, you can have the monthly service charge waived on certain checking accounts. Required direct deposit amounts vary by product. For details visit fhb.com/personal/checking
  • Helps to ensure a consistent flow of income

What you can do with FHB:

Ask your employer or funding provider to set up direct deposit using a voided check or your FHB account and routing number.

  • Routing Numbers:
    • Hawaii: 121301015
    • Guam: 121405238
    • CNMI: 121403065
You can find your full account number in FHB Online®1 or in the FHB Mobile app2. There’s no charge to use direct deposit.
  1. Set a Low Balance Alert

How it works: (alt: What to know)

Low balance alerts are notifications sent to your phone or email when your account dips below a certain threshold. They help you stay ahead of your spending.

    Why it matters:

  • Can help you avoid overdraft fees by giving you a heads-up when your balance is getting low
  • Keeps you informed before automatic payments or large purchases hit your account

What you can do with FHB:

Set up alerts in FHB Online or the FHB Mobile app. Choose a balance amount that works for you, and we’ll notify3 you if your account drops below it. Learn how to set alerts at fhb.com/alerts.

  1. Use In-Network ATMs or Cash Back at Stores

How it works: (alt: What to know)

Stick to ATMs within your bank’s network, or request cash back at stores when checking out with your debit card (just make sure to select “debit” instead of “credit” on the keypad).

    Why it matters:

  • Avoids fees charged by both the ATM owner and your bank for using out-of-network ATM machines

What you can do with FHB:

Take advantage of over 200 FHB ATMs and 48 branches for fee-free access to your money. Find a location near you at locations.fhb.com.

  1. Switch to eStatements4

How it works: (alt: What to know)

eStatements are digital versions of your monthly account statements. They’re delivered via secure online access—no paper, no clutter.

    Why it matters:

  • Enrolling in eStatements waives the monthly service charge on the Pure Checking Account
  • Helps reduce paper waste and keeps your records easily accessible

What you can do with FHB:

Enroll in eStatements through FHB Online or the FHB Mobile app. For Pure Checking Account holders, this simple switch will waive your monthly service charge. Learn more at fhb.com/estatements.

  1. Keep a "Cushion" in Your Account

How it works: (alt: What to know)

A “cushion” is a rolling buffer of funds in your checking account. It’s a smart way to protect yourself from accidental overdrafts or unexpected charges.

    Why it matters:

  • Helps prevent overdraft fees when bills or purchases exceed your available balance

What you can do with FHB:

Check your balance frequently via FHB Online, the FHB Mobile app, any FHB ATM, or by calling our 24/7 automated voice service at 808-844-4444 (Oahu) or toll-free at 1-888-844-4444. Monitoring your cushion helps ensure peace of mind.
