First Hawaiian Bank’s “Aloha for Hawaii” Campaign Donates $50,000 to Hawaii Meals on Wheels, Provides 6,800 Meals to Feed 820 Kupuna

First donation resulting from the initiative supports meal delivery to our elderly population while supporting Hawaii’s restaurant industry.

HONOLULU, April 23, 2020 – First Hawaiian Bank (FHB) today announced that the “Aloha for Hawaii” campaign made its first donation this week to Hawaii Meals on Wheels as a result of the first 50,000 restaurant takeout and delivery purchases FHB cardholders made through this initiative.

The First Hawaiian Bank Foundation donated $50,000 from the Aloha for Hawaii fund to Hawaii Meals on Wheels, which allows the organization to provide 6,800 nutritious meals prepared by local restaurants. These daily hot meals are served to 820 kupuna in the community.

“We are so appreciative of the Aloha for Hawaii Fund and this generous donation from the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation,” said Michelle Cordero-Lee, CEO of Hawaii Meals on Wheels. “Now more than ever our kupuna need our support to keep them healthy and safe. Our meal delivery program helps our elderly community continue to shelter at home while eating balanced, nutritious and delicious meals, and donations from organizations like First Hawaiian Bank are essential for us to continue this program.”

The Bank’s “Aloha for Hawaii” initiative, which launched earlier in April, is a special program that offers support to Hawaii restaurants and provides up to $1 million in donations to the Aloha for Hawaii Fund, which has been established to support non-profits with food supply and health and human service programs for those impacted by COVID-19. FHB’s goal is to generate one million takeout or delivery purchases at restaurants across Hawaii, and it plans to donate up to $1 million to local nonprofits that are standing up food supply and health and human service programs that support those most at risk as a part of this initiative. FHB customers can participate by using any FHB debit or credit card to purchase a takeout or delivery meal in Hawaii, and the Bank will automatically make a donation to the Aloha for Hawaii Fund.

“Hawaii Meals on Wheels is a great example of an organization working hard to help our community Kupuna who are most at risk during this pandemic,” said Cameron Nekota, First Hawaiian Bank Foundation President. “We started ‘Aloha for Hawaii’ to help our neighbors in the restaurant industry and the local nonprofits that are doing important work during this challenging time. The Aloha for Hawaii initiative is making an impact on our community, and I’m proud of what our community and our organization have been able to accomplish so early in this campaign as we work toward our $1 million donation goal.”
